Steve Vermillion has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service, community and family. Steve has served his various communities throughout the world by volunteering for many local charity events and service organizations.
Steve is currently the President of the Vietnam Dustoff Association, a position he has held since 2005. He is a Life Member of; The Vietnam Veterans Association, the VFW, the Dustoff Association, and the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association-Washington Chapter. He is a member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, is a founding member and board member of the Puyallup Historical Hatchery Foundation and had served as a Good Samaritan Reading Mentor in the Puyallup School District. In 2013, Steve was inducted as the 33d member of the Dustoff Association Hall of Fame in San Antonio, Texas.
Steve is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, received his master's degree in Business Administration from Saint Martin’s University and later completed additional post-graduate studies at the University of Washington. A major part of Steve’s career has been the completion of 25+ years in the US Army where he served as a Master Army Aviator, Commander and Staff Officer throughout the United States and overseas. Serving in Vietnam, he was awarded both the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross awards for heroism.
Steve’s commitment to education and learning were reflected in his teaching positions as an Adjunct Instructor teaching graduate courses for twelve years for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and as the Professor of Military Science at the University of Washington for four years. From his teaching experience, he opened his first business working as an independent consultant and organizational trainer specializing in Individual and Team Performance. Steve is also a former military flight instructor, standardization flight instructor and holds commercial pilot certifications in single engine airplanes, helicopters and private pilot rating in gliders. He is instrument rated in both airplanes and helicopters.
Steve and his wife Lori have been married for 45 years and have lived throughout the United States and Europe. These travels and adventures have given them a great deal of insight to history and the culture of the respective areas. Throughout all of their travels and responsibilities, they have raised two children, both of whom graduated from Puyallup schools and universities in Washington State and they now have two grandchildren. Steve and his family have lived in Puyallup since 1985 and can remember when there wasn't a mall on South Hill, and where a horse farm existed in the area now occupied by Lowes, and the former Haggen Foods store .....and Bradley Lake was privately owned. When Steve and Lori are out walking, they are normally accompanied by Hank, their Rhodesian Ridgeback hound.
After completing four years on the Puyallup City Council, Steve has moved on to different endeavors. He currently coaches junior league bowling as a USBC Certified Silver Coach from September through May spending four hours with young bowlers every Saturday morning. Additionally, he coached Girls High School Bowling for Puyallup High School. Steve continues his involvement with the Puyallup Historical Hatchery Foundation where the foundation recently hosted Puyallup School District fourth grade classes as part of their STEM classroom and field trip learning experience. Now with a bit more free time, he continues to write and is working on completing his second book as well working on home projects and traveling in their motor home. He also offers private bowling lessons to all age bowlers and experience levels.
